Tech-Ed 2007

Thursday, August 16th, 2007

I try not to put too much Tech stuff up on here as it’s meant to be more about our lives and not my geeky obsessions, but I just spent a couple of days up at Tech-Ed in Auckland courtesy of Axon sending a few employees up to the conference. This was my first Tech-Ed, and I really enjoyed the security related presentations by Steve Riley and Kai Axford. It was very interesting watching Kai’s Forensic based presentation and the Q&A with NZ Police’s E-Crime unit, then closing the day listening to a hyped-up (read: normal) Steve Riley stressing that there is NO back door into BitLocker and YES the bad guys can use it too if they want to.

What Bitlocker could mean for Computer Forensics is an interesting space to watch. If the penalty for not supplying your decryption key (or PIN, or whatever) is six months in jail and you have something on disk that could send you away for Waaaaaaayy longer, what would you choose?

World Times added

Monday, November 20th, 2006

Just added a world times sidebar entry to the blog, showing the time and date in New Zealand, Edinburgh, and Bermuda.

Credit goes to the guy over at neotrinity who wrote this.

Website Upgrade

Friday, March 31st, 2006

Just updated the blog from Wordpress 2.0 to 2.0.2 and a couple of (expected) things happened:

1) We lost our custom header (the image of Jules in the cave)

2) The Itunes and Weather Plugins disappeared.

The things I hadn’t counted on though were the Authors list disappearing from the side panel, and the Author’s name disappearing from the Posts.

That seems to be all that is wrong though, so overall it was a pretty painless upgrade. I’ll just need to have a hunt about again to reconfigure these things.

UPDATE: Oh yeah, just noticed the countdown timer vanished as well! Still, it’s not bad considering the update consisted of me clicking a button in Site5’s Fantastico Control Panel.

Now Playing in ITunes

Friday, January 27th, 2006

Now that I’ve added an auto-update in the top right that tells you what we last listened to in ITunes, I guess I better try and make sure that last thing I listen to before going off-line isn’t too weak. Or I need to kill itunesblogger before playing my Barry Manilow ;-)

The First Post on the new blog

Tuesday, January 24th, 2006

Just set up my account with site5 today, and already have the DNS updated and this blog up. It’s a very good service and a really good price.

One of the very cool features is something that Site5 call “fantastico” - it’s a cool tool that ran a script to install the Wordpress blog engine for me, which I am now using to maintain the site. As much as I liked my menu on my old site, this will be much easier to maintain, and this blog will allow Jules to post with her own username.

So, welcome to the new site. Unfortunately, now I need to migrate all the old Blog Entries across.. :-(

Found our Car on Google Earth

Wednesday, January 18th, 2006

Just installed Google Earth yesterday, and did what everyone else does as soon as they load it - tries to find their house. To my utter amusement, I found our car parked outside. Don’t know when they did the satellite imaging, or how often they will update it, but it amused me greatly.

The photo is below. Cllick on it for a larger version of the picture.

Dave and Jules Car on Google Earth

UPDATE : a friend just sorted out the date for me. The photos of Bermuda appear to have been taken some time over Cup Match 2003. After checking some landmarks, it looks like they are right.

The Blog Begins

Tuesday, May 24th, 2005

I started this as I want to provide updates on the website for friends and family, but I can’t always be bothered creating a new HTML Pages under the updates link. I wanted to update the page because of a dive we did at the weekend, and this seemed an easier way to do it.

We’ll see how it goes.

I’ll back date the dive entry for May 21st.
